Match Report: Taunton Tigers Mens Team — 16 February 2008

Taunton Tigers vs Sheffield Arrows

An early 3 point score form Captain Joe Andrews gave false hope of a high scoring game as defensive intensity was to become the dominant factor in the game. Sheffield had made losses and gains in the January transfer window most notably seeing Rankine from the Arrrows and Hastings from rivals Manchester Magic swapping teams. The result for now at least seems to have produced a more coherent and aggressive Arrows outfit who frustrated Taunton for long spells.

The Tigers themselves started aggressively and their own brand of team defence that has been effective against many teams in the top flight was prominent again. However at the other end they rarely found any offensive rhythm and fluidity. Andrews and Rich Anderson top scored for the travelling Tigers but even they were only able to contribute 12 points each.

The first half finished with an incredible 13 – 10 lead for the arrows. Things picked up at the offensive end in the 2nd quarter with experienced Siddel(21 points game-high) making a series of jump-shots for Sheffield and Tigers youngest player Rickward (9 points) getting to the basket as the teams finished the quarter at 33 – 29.

Taunton's scoring potential took further blows when Saunders first then Yabsley, fresh off a 35 points performance against Worthing picked up injuries. Sheffield blew open the game in the 3rd with big American Centre Bevard (18 points) contributing 10 points in the period to open up a 53 – 38 lead.

Taunton kept the Arrows other American Martin quiet but continued to struggle to score themselves until the 4th when it was too late. Head Coach Ronnie Heath accepted that this wasn't meant to be their day.

“I was delighted with the players' commitment from the start and positive attitude in adversity but offensively literally nothing went well. We didn't look after the ball, there was no chemistry, we took poor options, we shot poorly, no individual played well and for the first time as a coach I started hoping for some luck.”

Heath was quick to praise Sheffield though,

“The truth is they made things very difficult for us and never let up the whole game. Would it be controversial to suggest they are better without Rankine?”

Taunton will hope to bounce back against West Anglia Fury this Saturday at Wellsprings Leisure Centre. The Tigers Tip-off at 5.30pm, tickets can be bought on the door £4 Adults, £2 Children/Concessions.

Final Score: Taunton Tigers 62 – 77 Sheffield Arrows
