Rhondda Rebels away in the Cup is not normally a fixture to be relished. Rhondda are considered to be the best Womens side in the UK, are currently sponsored by Coca Cola, and are presently competing in European Basketball, as well as leading Division 1.
Although an expected formality for the Rebels, surprisingly the Tigers Women were keen to enjoy the experience of getting on court with the best in Britain — and what a great experience it was, particularly, for juniors Frankie Fair and Lauren Sanderson. In games such as these, realistic targets need to be set, and Steve Green set a ‘tongue in cheek’ target of restricting the Rebels to less than 30 points per quarter.
The girls did a better than expected and excellent job at the defensive end, and restricted the Rebels to an average of only 24 points a quarter, with the vast majority of these points coming from Rebel's superb fast breaking offensive. Despite losing the game 96 – 18, Tigers could hold their head high — all players had decent court time (unlike the Rebels who didn't fully rotate their bench) and all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Everyone hopes that Rhondda now go on to win the Cup and we can say we were knocked out by the eventual winners.
