The Taunton Tigers U16 boys can hold their heads high despite losing in the first round of the playoffs, 66-50, bringing the team's season to an end—but what an end!
Haringey Hawks went undefeated in 18 regular season games in a largely London-based conference and averaged 94 points per game. The boys, however, were determined to make the three-hour journey to North London and give a good account of themselves, and they did that and so much more.

Tigers U16s have made the play-offs after a close 54 – 47 win over Coventry Elite on Saturday 24 March at the Huish Dome. The team finished tied for third with Bristol Storm in the Midlands South West Conference with 15 wins and five losses, but came in fourth as Bristol won the head-to-head aggregate by four slim points.

It will be do or die in the final game of the season following the U16s loss to Bristol Storm, 72 – 53 in their penultimate league game. Had Tigers either won the game or lost by fewer than 16 points the team would have finished third in the conference, securing a playoff place.

The U16s have two games left to play this season and each will determine whether the team makes the playoffs. The Midlands South West conference title has already been wrapped up by the undefeated Arden Griffins and Stroud Sharks have locked up second and a place in post-season play. The final two playoff places will go to two of Taunton, Storm and Coventry, meaning based on the results of the next two games, Tigers could either finish as high as third in the conference or miss the playoffs completely.

An injury ravaged Tigers side stunned league leaders, Canary Wharf with a win which was as exciting as it was unexpected, in the circumstances. Without a number of regular starters (including some late withdrawals) this looked like being a tough assignment for a team that had lost its last two contests, but they showed what character and strength in depth this club has.

Week nine saw Taunton take the short trip north up the M5 to face Bristol Academy Flyers in a rematch of their Cup game only three weeks ago. Expect for a short period of the first encounter when Flyers went on a comeback run, Tigers were comfortable 15 point winners on that day.

Remembrance Sunday saw the U16s face Premier side Plymouth Marjon in the second round of the Cup. Marjon had been performing well in the Premier South this season, with four wins and four losses and were coming off a 50-point victory in the league the day before.

Following a weekend off, the U16s hosted Sporting Club Albion last Saturday and ran away with the game, 89 – 38. It was the team's largest winning margin this season and improved their league record to 3 – 2.

This past Saturday saw the high-powered and undefeated Arden Griffins visit the Dome to take on the U16s who were coming off a big win the previous weekend to rivals Bristol Academy Flyers. The Griffins showed why they have gone largely unchallenged this season and beat Tigers 71 – 56 in a mostly exciting see-saw contest.

The Tigers roared to their second convincing victory in the space of a week against league rivals Oxford Brookes University. Tigers started ferociously in the first quarter with Dan Howe playing great defence on the Oxford guards, not allowing them to settle into the game.

A good weekend for Tigers with wins for all our teams. The under 14 Boys, playing their first game of the season on Saturday, beat UWIC Archers 65 – 52 at home in the League. The under 18 Men recorded two wins this weekend: An overtime victory against Brixton Topcats in the League on Saturday at home 67 – 61 and on Sunday they beat UWIC Archers in the National Cup 61 – 51 and will now face Bristol Academy Flyers in the next round. The under 16s also progressed in the Cup beating Bristol Academy Flyers 65 – 50 away from home and will now face Plymouth Marjon in the next round. In the final game of the weekend, the Tigers Men's team defeated Reading University Rockets in the National Shield at home 78 – 52 and will now face Solent City Smugglers in the next round. Well done to all our teams!

The U18 boys played their first home game of the season against Newham Youngbloods after a disappointing game against Reading Rockets one week before. Despite missing starting point guard Hayden Allen and several players suffering from minor injuries everyone was ready to show better basketball on their home court.

The U16 boys embarked on their longest road trip of the season last Saturday to open their 2011/12 campaign and came away with the spoils. The team endured the three-hour journey to Telford and went out and defeated the Shropshire Warriors 65 – 49.

Taunton Tigers Men's team comfortably beat UWIC Archers at home, in their first game of the Division 3 South league. The game ended 94 – 50. The senior Men play at home again next Sunday when they host local rivals Plymouth Marjon. Tip-off 16:30. Photos from the UWIC game can be seen on our Flickr page. Taunton Tigers will be well represented at this weekend's Boys under 17 Regional Development Tournament in Nottingham. Hayden Allen, Adam Lewis, Bradley Stocker and Louis Ubaka will suit up for the South West squad. Mark Crncich, Tigers U16 Boys Head Coach, will coach the South West team.
With four Tigers on the squad Taunton boasts more players than any other club in the South West. Coach Crncich said,
“The players fought hard and performed throughout the selection process and summer programme and fully deserve to be on the team. It is a testament to our focus on player development.”
The South West will tip-off first against the South East at 13:45 on Saturday at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena, followed by a 17:15 start against the North West. On Sunday, the 10 regions plus Scotland and Wales will play for classification and play-off positions depending on the first day's results.
Taunton Tigers senior Men's team will play their first league game of the season on Sunday 25th September against UWIC Archers. The match will be played at Wellsprings Leisure Centre in Taunton at 15:00. Sign up to the event on Facebook and share it with your friends.
Taunton Tigers Division 3 Men's Team will begin the 2011/12 season when they face off against Glamorgan Gladiators on Saturday 10th September at Wellsprings Leisure Centre in the National Cup. Taunton Tigers U14 Trials will take place on Tuesday August 30 and Wednesday August 31, 10:00 – 14:00 in the Richard Huish Dome. The first trial for the U16s squad will be held on Thursday, August 18 from 14:00 – 17:00 at the Sportsdome in the Richard Huish College. There will be an additional trial in early September to include those unable to attend the first session. The squad's training schedule for the season is currently being arranged and will be announced shortly.

Bag2School is a free fundraising scheme established in 2001. They work in partnership with Schools, Business, Community Groups, Local Councils and Charities to help you raise from your donations. They operate throughout the UK; collecting and selling your unwanted textiles to importers and wholesalers in many countries of Eastern and Western Europe, Africa and Asia.
The Tigers U18 Girls are organising Bags4basketball. We need to collect second hand adults and children%s clothing, sheets, blankets, curtains, soft toys, shoes, belts and handbags, and as much as possible. The more we collect the more we raise. Blue bags to collect in, will arrive in two weeks but everyday black bags can also be used. The clothes/shoes do not have to be in good condition as what is not used is recycled. First collection is 9am on Monday 24th October. Bags can be dropped off between 5pm and 6.30pm on Sunday 23rd October or between 8am and 8.45am on the morning of 24th October.
